We live in a world that is changing constantly. In most parts of the world, the landscape has developed from a traditional economy into an information economy and simultaneously transferred from being efficiency-driven to innovation-driven. In an efficiency-driven economy, design serves as a strategic management tool to increase market shares and to generate functional value for users and companies. In an innovation-driven economy, in contrast, innovating organizations change in a variety of ways, e.g. by implementing new business models and by adopting new practices such as crowd-funding and co-innovation. Internet platforms have provided new ways to leverage services for businesses and individuals. This poses new challenges to organizations and changes the role and impact of design management from research to implementation. Change has become the “New Normal”, not only in the Western World, but particularly also in China, where many of these developments occur at an even faster pace. The key questions related to these developments are: What is role of design management in this changing context? What kind of new methods and tools can be developed to cope with the changes or, even better, to anticipate and drive change? Can design management remain unchanged? What kind of studies, including case studies, can be introduced to address these research questions both in China and in any other country?
